Two weeks ago in Indianapolis, the Quad Lock Honda team delivered another solid performance, with all three riders finishing inside the top ten and Joey Savatgy moving up to sixth in the championship standings heading into Birmingham.

The Indianapolis round featured the Triple Crown format, where riders compete in three main events. Each race is scored using Olympic-style points, first place receives one point, second place two points, and so on. The rider with the lowest combined score across the three races wins the overall and is then awarded championship points according to the AMA rulebook (25 points for first, 22 for second, etc.).

All three Quad Lock Honda riders qualified directly for the night program. For the second weekend in a row, the team looked comfortable and competitive in qualifying, with Savatgy placing 7th, Shane McElrath 9th and Christian Craig 11th.

The Indianapolis track proved challenging throughout the evening, with soft dirt and deep ruts separating the field.

In the opening final, Christian Craig got a terrific start and continued to show improvement, finishing 10th. Savatgy charged through the field to claim 7th, posting lap times quicker than several riders ahead of him. McElrath, after a difficult start, worked his way to 12th.

In the second final, Savatgy again fought through the pack to an impressive 5th-place finish. Craig continued his strong riding to take 8th, while McElrath finished 11th.

In the final race of the night, McElrath raised the pace to finish 9th, with Craig crossing the line in 10th. Unfortunately Savatgy was unable to complete all the laps after injuring his foot, finishing 19th.

Craig recorded his best overall result of the season with 8th overall, moving him to 14th in the championship standings.

“It was better,” said Craig. “The team said it would be a process and it’s hard to be patient, but I need to be. The goal is to keep progressing. The bike is feeling good and I’ll keep my head down and continue building.”

Despite the setback in the final race, Savatgy secured 9th overall, which moved him into 6th place in the championship.

“I’m bummed about the injury,” Savatgy said. “I didn’t crash, my foot slipped off and I basically ran over it. Thankfully it didn’t really affect our points, and it’s exciting to be sitting inside the top six in the championship going into the break. Breaking into the top five is the goal, and ultimately getting on the podium. I’m going to try to ride this weekend. I’ll do press and then make a decision. It is broken and there’s been a lot of swelling, but it’s getting better. I won’t know for another 24 hours if I can race this weekend, but I want to.”

McElrath recorded his second consecutive top-ten overall finish, placing 10th in Indianapolis.

“It was a solid night of racing in Indianapolis,” McElrath said. “Two out of the three races were strong, but there are still things to improve. The past two weeks have been good and I feel like we came into the break in a good place. Hopefully we can keep that momentum rolling.”

This weekend marks the return of Supercross competition in Birmingham.
